Course Objectives: This
is an intermediate course designed to improve the reading and vocabulary
skills necessary for college success. The course consists of work in
class, plus 2 hours per week of work in the Reading Lab (third floor),
plus homework. We will work to:
1. improve your reading comprehension rate;
2. expand your vocabulary, mainly through finding new words in
context and through the
study of Greek and Latin word parts
commonly found in English
words;
3. develop better use of the dictionary;
4. learn how and when to skim, study-read and read critically;
5. develop the ability to comprehend prose well enough to state
main idea, remember
details, summarize, take notes, outline
and discuss what you have
read;
6. increase your enjoyment of reading as a tool for study or relaxation.
