Essay #2 Writing Guidelines

Your essay should focus on issues raised in the Leonard Pitts “Right To Know Trumps Privacy” essay (pages 337-339).

Choose ONE of the topics from “Writing About Mode and Theme” at the end of Pitts’ essay (pages 341-342)

Develop your essay using techniques we have discussed in Chapter Ten (pages 314-320).  Specifically, follow the six steps for writing argumentative and persuasive essays:

  1. Consider your reader.
  2. Write a persuasive thesis statement that takes your audience into consideration.
  3. Match your supporting reasons to your reader’s priorities and goals.
  4. Incorporate concessions.
  5. Determine the best order for your reasons.
  6. Develop each reason with either logical or emotional evidence.

Additionally, if you quote any outside source, you must follow the rules for proper citation, which include (1)  putting any directly copied language within quotation marks, and (2) naming the author or publisher of those words.

Use the student essay “In Response to “A Just Society…” as a model of the minimum length for your essay which should run between 300-750 words.

First (typed) draft is due: Monday, January 29, 2007 in class at 8 am.  Please bring 2 printed copies.
