1. Student Introductions, Course Information, Homepage Orientation.
2. Diagnostic Testing: Essay

Read the “Psychology Today” article.  Write for 50 minutes on ONE of the following topics:

1. Relate a recent incident when you became angry.  Analyze your behavior. Did you behave effectively?  Would you do something differently next time?

2. What was the article about?  Respond to the article.  What is your opinion?

3. Do you think it’s healthier to vent anger or to suppress it?

4. How do people deal with anger in your culture?  Is it different from how people deal with anger in L.A.?
 
HW:
1. Buy all books and materials.
2. Complete Homepage Orientation.

3. Scan WC: (1) “Preface to the Student” pp. xiv-xxiii.  What kinds of errors do you make when writing in English?  Do you make more global errors or more local errors? (2)  Expanding  Vocabulary”, p. 271-3.  What specific strategies will you use this semester to expand your vocabulary?

4. Online Forum #1: Post your response by midnight, Sunday, Feb 20th .

5. Bring $10 to our next class meeting to buy 21B Handouts Booklet.

6. Read LA, p. 152: “Final Writing Assignment”.  What film, TV show, or commercial might you like to evaluate?

You do not need to write any essay on this topic AT THIS TIME. I am asking simply

that you begin to make a choice about what film, TV show, or commercial you'd like to work on.

This will be an oral and written assignment due in May, 2005.

7. Re-read the “Anger Collocations” handout that I gave you in class.  Choose 8 expressions using the word “anger”.  Write 8 true sentences using these new expressions. Due 2/28.

1. Don’t forget to come to your conference at the time you signed up!  Please plan to arrive 15 minutes early so you can take a look at your essay before your conference.

2. Be sure you have watched the film “West Side Story” (I will be showing it next week in ESL 125 from 6:45-9:00pm.  If you don’t see it then—or if you miss part of it due to your conference—you may view the film at the SMC Library, or you may rent it from most video rental stores to watch at home.

3. Meet with your Study Group (in person, via email, or via phone) to talk about Verb Forms, your essay revision, and the new topic in L.A. chapter 4.

4. WC, Unit 2: Verb Forms.  Complete the chapter preview, pp 28-32.  Take the pre-test.
