FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS FROM THE FIRST DAY OF ESL 21A

Q:  Is the online discussion equal to or similar to a journal?

A: Yes.

Q:  I’m worried about using the computer to complete assignments for the class.

A: You can get help in the Cayton Center, from an ESL tutor, from your teacher, or from a classmate.  Don’t hesitate to ask!

Q: I feel shy.

A: That is completely normal.

Q: Can we use a used book?

A: Yes, you can—if you can find one.  However, be aware that the book requires that you write in the book, so if you have a book that already has the answers written in it, you may not benefit fully from your studies.

Q: Is there a break during class?

A: Nope!

Q: Does this class finish on time?  I have another class afterwards.

A: I will try to end class on time, but can’t always promise to be “on the dot”!

Q: What does “Read and Review” mean?

A: Although there is no written assignment required and there is nothing to “hand in” to the teacher, you should go back and revisit the material.

Q: Will you correct our papers?

A: Yes, I certainly will offer suggestion and correction on your essays!

Q: What “ESL Support Courses” should I take?

A: I will tell you your scores on the reading quiz and on the writing diagnostic.  Based on these scores, you should gain an idea of which additional courses to take.

Q: Where can I check my grade?

A: Actually, there are TWO places you should check.  Your Discussion Grade will be in eCompanion.  All other grades will be on the course homepage.  At the end of the semester, all grades will be calculated and posted on the course homepage.

Q: Can I get an “A” in this class?

A: I do award “A” grades for “A” work.  Last semester about 10% of my students earned “As”.  If you would like to take the class for credit/non-credit, you should file the paperwork ASAP!

Q: When will I be ready for an English class?

A: Once you pass ESL 21A and ESL 21B, you are technically eligible to take English 1.  Some students elect to take ESL 25 before moving on the English 1, just to polish up their prose.

Q: I have other classes to buy books for, so I need more time.

A: Remember that we won’t be using the textbooks until Weds, Sept 5th, so you have 10 days!

Q: What does the abbreviation “pp” mean?

A: This is common shorthand and it means “pages”.  Pp 4-8 means read and complete pages 4,5,6,7, & 8.
