My background: I was born in Los Angeles and have lived here all my life except for one year when I went to the University of Lund in Sweden. I went to UCLA both as an undergraduate (my BA degree was in History) and as a graduate student (my MA is in Teaching English as a Second Language). I have been teaching ESL at Santa Monica College and other colleges for more than 20 years. My teaching philosophy: I love teaching ESL and can't imagine doing anything else. Meeting international students is like traveling around the world, and I love to learn about my students' cultures. I am respectful of cultural differences, and I know that for many students, it's difficult to participate in discussions, so I don't pressure students to speak up in class; instead I encourage students to talk in small groups where they can feel safe and comfortable. In addition, I believe that humor in the classroom is important, and I encourage students to laugh, especially at my bad jokes!. I try to make my classroom environment fun, but I am serious about lessons and work.
