June 6, 2002

Today we completed chapter 12 and took our quiz on it. I overviewed the areas in chapter 13 that will be covered on your final exam. The exam will cover chapters 10 - 13 and it will be given next Tuesday, June 11th AT 8:00 A.M. I will close but not lock the door. I have not yet read your extra credit assignment that is worth 1 point. I will do so this weekend and post your points on the spreadsheet by next Monday. Have a nice weekend. Today we completed chapter eleven and took our quiz on it. We then began our discussion of chapter twelve which we will complete on Thursday. Your quiz on chapter 12 will be on Thursday. I will lecture on the material in chapter thirteen that you will be required to know for your final exam. The final exam will cover chapters 10 - 13 and will be given on Tuesday, June 11th at 8:00 a.m. Your anonymous evaluations and other extra credit paper are due this Thursday, June 6th! Today we completed chapter 10. The take home quiz was turned in. We then discussed chapter 11 and we will complete it and take the quiz on it within 30 minutes of the lecture next Tuesday. We will then begin chapter 12 and complete it by Thursday at which point we will have our quiz. We will not have a quiz on chapter 13. I will lecture on chapter 13 next Thursday and confine final examination questions relating to this chapter to the material that is discussed in class. Bring the completed quiz strip, filled out, to class and be expected to turn it in at the start of the lecture. On Thursday we will cover chapter eleven in its entirety and then take our quiz on it. Today the second unit examination (chapters 7-9) was given. I will post your grades by Saturday! We will complete chapter 10 next Tuesday and take our quiz on it at the end of the session. We will cover chapter 11 (arson and burglary) next Thursday and take our quiz on it at the end of Thursday's class. Have a nice weekend.

Today we completed chapter 9 and then took our quiz on it. I spent about 30 minutes discussing the crime of rape and how it has evolved from common law to the present. We will complete this chapter next Tuesday and then take our quiz on it. Click HERE for today's lecture.Your unit exam (chapters 7 - 9) will be given this Thursday. You must have a large blue book, #2 pencil, and a pen. Do not write anything in the bluebook before bringing it to class. The exam will begin promptly at 9:30 a.m. The door to the classroom will be closed at 9:30 a.m., but not locked. If you arrive late, please have your materials out so that you do not disturb any of the students who are already taking the exam.

Today we discussed chapter 9 and left off with voluntary manslaughter and its elements. We will complete chapter 9 next Tuesday and then take our quiz within about 30 minutes from the time that class starts. We then will overview chapter 10 (rape and the related crimes). Today we completed chapter 8 and took our quiz on it. We then started our discussion relating to chapter 9. We will complete chapter 9 on Thursday and have our next unit exam next Tuesday. Today watched a video on the Insanity Defense. We then discussed the cases in chapter 8 and took our quiz on it. Next week we will study chapter 9, Homicide. Today we completed chapter 7 and took our quiz collectively as a class. I lectured for about 10 - 15 minutes on the Insanity defense (chapter 8) and the difference between legal justification (Chapter 7) and legal excuse (chapter 8). Today we watched some video material on chapter 7, and discussed the law related to self defense. I also collected the extra credit projects. There will be no class next Tuesday, April 30th! Today we took our first unit exam on chapters 1 through 6. Your exam scores will be posted by 7:00 p.m. this evening. On Thursday we will begin our discussion of chapter 7. Also on Thursday your first anonymous evaluation for this class will be due. Click HERE for the instructions with regard to your evaluation. The evaluation is worth one half percentage point.

Today we completed chapter 6 and then took our quiz on it. We then reviewed for your upcoming unit exam which will cover chapters 1 - 6 and will be given on Tuesday, April 23rd (when you return from the spring break). As previously mentioned, the exam will be objective (between 50 - 65) questions. The questions will be yes-no, true-false and multiple choice. For today's lecture, click HERE. Today we completed our discussion on law of attempt and discussed all of the primary cases in chapter 6 relating to the crime of attempt. On Thursday we will discuss conspiracy and solicitation, take our quiz and then review for your first unit exam which will be given after the spring break on April 23rd.

Today we discussed the concepts of aiding and abetting, being an accessory after the fact and vicarious liability. We went through the primary cases up to and including State vs. Casey's General Stores, Inc., and Hy-Vee, Inc. We will complete this chapter within the first 15 minutes on Thursday and then take our quiz. We will then begin our discussion of chapter 6. Today we completed chapter 4 and took our quiz on it. We did not cover any of the material in chapter 5. We will begin chapter 5 next Tuesday and complete it next Thursday at which time we will take our quiz. Today we watched the end of the video involving the ski accident and then watched another video involving death caused by the defendant striking the victim with a single punch. I then overviewed the mens rea cases and suggested how you might want to approach these. On Thursday, we will discuss causation, the cases and then take our quiz . Click HERE for today's lecture.

March 21, 2002

Today we completed chapter 3 and took our quiz on it. We then began chapter 4. I covered the areas of specific intent (purposeful), general intent (knowing), recklessness, and negligence. We then watched the first part of a video depicting a death caused by a skier. We will watch the balance of the video on Tuesday and then we will continue with chapter 4. Your quiz on chapter 4 will be next Thursday.

Today we discussed the law and cases in chapter 3 but did not take our quiz. We ended class at 10:20. On Thursday we will complete this chapter, take the quiz on it, and then we will begin our discussion of chapter 4.

March 14, 2002

Today we discussed chapter three and focused on the areas of actus reus (possession, omission to act, involuntary vs. voluntary acts, and words). Next Tuesday, we will complete chapter three and then have our quiz on it. If any time remains we will begin chapter four. Have a nice weekend.

Today we went over several of the terms in chaper two and we discussed the Sterling case at length and the Metzger note case as well. We discussed the concept of Due Process of Law. On Thursday we will complete chapter two and then take our quiz on it. FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVE NOT RECEIVED A 100% ON THE SYLLABUS QUIZ, PLEASE TURN ONE IN ON THURSDAY.

February 28, 2002

Today we spent the entire session going over the template that is used for briefing cases. I also suggested that you obtain 100 copies of the blank template. The most economical way to do this is get 50 double sided copies. The template can be found on the web site by going to the FAQ link and scrolling down to #9 and clicking on the link found. On next Tuesday we will apply the template to the primary cases in chapter 2 and discuss the rules of law in the chapter. We will complete chapter 2 next Thursday and then take our quiz on it. Today we completed chapter 1 and took our quiz on it. Your grades will be posted later this evening. I assigned chapter 2 for Thursday. I suggest that you access the FAQ link and look at question no. 9 regarding the briefing of cases. It is of utmost importance that you devote sufficient time and energy to the process of briefing cases. This will become a very important learning tool for the remainder of the semester. Also, be sure that you turn in your syllabus quiz if you haven't received a 100% on it.

Today we covered several areas addressed in chapter one. We talked about the differences between civil and criminal law, the role of the judge and jury, the sources of criminal law, the distinction between crimes and torts, etc. We will complete chapter one next Tuesday and take our quiz on it.
