California has always been a land of legendary extremes. Stories abound of its incredible natural beauty, its enormous wealth and diversity of natural resources and landscapes. These stories have been repeated since the first Spanish explorers and settlers arrived here centuries ago. Since then the people of California, both real and imagined, have always successfully competed with nature for the spotlight. Even the state's name is one of mythical origin.
California is a large and diverse state with many distinct local and regional characteristics. The twelve physiographic provinces on the map at left are but rough guides to the boundaries of these regions. In many cases, physical and cultural elements readily spill over from one province to the next.
Take a moment to peruse though the list of links below and better acquaint yourself with the dynamic state that is California.
