A TABULAR FORMAT OF PYLE'S AGEING AND SEXING METHODS FOR LANDBIRDS
By Walter H. Sakai and C. John Ralph
An example of the Hermit Thrush species account is available here as a PDF file.
The basic work was to put the ageing and sexing criteria in Pyle's book into an easily used tabular format. Two examples, Hermit Thrush and Yellow Warbler, are provided at the above site A list of the birds for which species accounts have been completed is also available at the above site.
You can order a copy of the Tabular Pyle by going to the Klamath Bird Observatory Website order form.
Of course, one can not and should not use the Tabular Pyle without having a copy of Peter Pyle's book, Identification Guide to North American Birds, Part I. Copies can be obtained by going to the Point Reyes Bird Observatory homepage.
Part II is scheduled to be out and for sale in September 2008. That is all I have heard. There has been no announcements as to ordering or pre-ordering copies, etc.
ERRATA - We will gradually start an errata page. As they start reaching me, I will post them.
NEW SPECIES ACCOUNTS - I complete new species accounts as I have time between classes and banding. I will either post the species accounts themselves to download or a list of new species. If it is the latter, owners of Tabular Pyles can contact me individually and I can send them to you by snail mail or electronically. e.g. the grackles and the rest of the thrashers we have not completed are almost ready.
FUTURE - We are considering the details of putting the entire Tabular Pyle in PDF format and burning CD's. The beauty of this would be reducing the cost of printing and shipping ($40 or so). Then, individuals can simply print out only those species accounts of birds they expect.
