This page lists the corrections for the Tabular
Pyle. If you come across any errors, inconsistencies, or confusions in any
of the species accounts, send them to sakai_walter@smc.edu,
or write to Walter H. Sakai, Santa Monica College, 1900 Pico Blvd, Santa Monica,
CA 90405-1628. That said, we should note that the first errata is that
Sakai's address is listed incorrectly in the North American Bird Bander article
written by C.J. Ralphs and myself. The above address is correct.
We suspect some are afraid to mention errors they have found
in the Tabular Pyle, but we welcome any and all comments.
The following are errata in the first edition, or what C.J. euphemistically called the "HY" edition, a term that should be appreciated by all banders.
p6 of the Index has a comparison chart of the Common and Great-tailed Grackle. The expectation then is that there are grackle species accounts. None have been done yet.
p233 The table showing the forehead plumage for an AHY male Blue-gray Gnatcatcher refers to fig. 288B. This should be fig. 228B. The figure is correct.
p235. For the Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Fig. 288 is included. This should be figure 228.
p383-5 There are duplicate species accounts for White-crowned Sparrows. Look at the edit date on the top right hand corner. The most recent one (3 April 2001) is the one to keep; discard the older version (27 October 2000).
One should consult the Errata for The Identification Guide to North American Birds: Part I on the Point Reyes Bird Observatory web site. We make every effort to check it ourselves and update our personal copies of Pyle and the Tabular Pyle.
One should also note updates put out by the Bird Banding Laboratory in MTAB. The MTAB updates are in the Pyle Errata, but one should always double-check.
We will shortly be putting out the SY version of the Tabular Pyle. The above and a large number of other typographic type errata have been corrected. New species accounts have been added. We know some of you have expressed concerns about having to constantly purchasing newer version of Tabular Pyle, as new errata are found, and new species accounts are completed. Our solution is to post new species accounts at this site in PDF format for download. We will also post older species accounts that have significant changes.
Sometime in the future, we are considering converting all of the species accounts into PDF format and burning them on CD. This will reduce the price by 90%, and allow the user to print only those species accounts that are used at the stations.
Another plan for the future is to generate an email list of owners of Tabular Pyle. We can then send you updates as they come.
The initial list was provided by Mike Quinlan and Ernie Rogers.
