Santa Monica, CA--- More than one dozen former Outlook workers proudly gathered at Marix Playa last Sunday night to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the Outlook's demise, knowing that in one sense, the doomed paper had been a trend-setter.
Most other newspapers are just now getting around to financial ruin. But the Copley chain was clearly ahead of the curve on this one, staggering through the go-go eighties and nineties while other newspapers were flush with cash, and finally sputtering to a close on March 13, 1998.
"When it came to layoffs, the Outlook was clearly a leader," beamed the paper's former veteran reporter, Saul Rubin, as he poured himself another kick-ass margarita. True enough, it would take other papers such as the Los Angeles Times and the Daily News almost a decade to catch up to the Outlook's record of employee dismissals.
There was much news to report from the gathering, but unfortunately, almost none of the attendees were still employed by a news agency to report it. The Kid is engaged; Ed Moosbrugger is a granddad of 10; Richard Hartog misplaced his hair; Lori S. was fired by yet another newspaper (The Breeze): Anne L. went from being a gumshoe reporter to a real gumshoe.
But have a look: Everyone still looks Mahvelous! (Scroll down for even more pictures)
