Intermediate Yoga Syllabus

CLASS MEETINGS: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:50 and 8:00 to 9:20. (Classes will begin at 6:35 and end by 7:40 (for 6:30 am class) and 8:05 and end by 9:10 (for the 8:00 am class)*. This is done to give the students time to dress before and after class.)

SITE: Gym 2 (Downstairs below the dance rooms)

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is an intermediate level yoga class. It will focus on standing asanas (poses), breathing, relaxation and meditation. Students will improve their flexibility and body awareness. This course is physically more demanding than Beginning Yoga (P.E. 58A). Students in this class must understand how to work in a pose. Students must have previous yoga experience and/or have taken P.E. 58A. Students who do not have any yoga background will be asked to drop this course.

Equipment: Students should provide their own sticky mats.

***Women who are pregnant or become pregnant, MUST drop this course! This class is not structured for pregnant women. By staying in this class you are acknowledging that you are not pregnant. Should you become pregnant after the last date to drop the course, let the instructor know. We will find a way to allow you to drop!

Students with health problems and/or under a doctor’s care must consult their doctors before taking this class! Students with chronic back problems should also consult their medical professionals. Students with eye pressure problems should be aware of postures that can affect them and must consult their doctors. By staying in this class you are acknowledging that you have been cleared by your doctor.

GRADING: Grading is based on attendance and participation. One written exam is given at the end of the semester. Grading will be as follows:

A = 0 to 3 absences B = 4 to 6 absences C = 7 to 9 absences

D = 10 to 12 absences F = 13 or more absences

Absences for studying, parking problems, etc. will not be excused! Absences for illness must be document by your doctor or the SMC health office. ONE MEDICAL ABSENCE WILL BE EXCUSED IF DOCUMENTED! These do not affect your grade.

*Tardiness will affect your grade. Students who arrive after 6:35 and before 6:45 (for the 6:30 am class) 8:05 and before 8:15 (for the 8:00 am class) will be marked tardy. TWO TARDIES COUNT AS ONE ABSENCE. Students who arrive after 6:45/8:15 are not allowed to participate and will be marked absent.

Up to three make-up classes will be allowed should a student attend a yoga practice with the SMC yoga club and sign in with the club. Students must notify the instructor in writing that they have made up a class.

DRESS: To be considered present in class, students must wear athletic attire. This means tights, shorts, sweats, t-shirts, etc. Shirts must be worn! No street clothes, jeans, belts, button-down shirts/blouses. Please restrict your use of perfumes, aftershaves, etc.
