Syllabus Ballet III–IV Instructor: Charlotte Richards

Catalog Description:

This course continues your development of ballet technique. The information you absorb this semester will be more advanced and more complex. It is essential that your foundation be strong. The movement material in this course and this department’s analytical approach to ballet may be different from your past experience with this movement form. Your progress will depend on both your ability to physically accomplish the work and on your thorough intellectual grasp of the concepts presented.

Course Objectives:

To explore concepts and approaches to technique and challenge the students to strive for a stronger technical base.

Course Content:

A. Basic Movement Concepts

1) Correct alignment including vertical alignment of the pelvis and the lower back/abdominal connection, shoulders in relation to hips, hip sockets to the heels, head/neck on top of shoulder girdle, and the ability to move through level changes and across the floor supporting correct alignment.

2) Rotation from the hip sockets including the concepts of wrap/resist, squaring off and standing against the floor. Gaining the strength and control to stand through the backs of your legs.

3) Freedom and release. Working with strength but without gripping or excess tension in the muscle. Working with length.

B. Movement Material

1) Stretching to increase your personal movement range.

2) Barre work including: plie, tendu, degage, rond de jambe a terre and en l’air, fondu, frappe, developpe, petit battement, grand battement.

3) More complex center work, including: adagio on half pointe; grand pirouettes; advanced petite allegro—changing directions and with beats; grand allegro, including temps de fleche, tour jete, pas de ciseux, cabriolle, grand pas de chat, saute basque.

C. A working knowledge of ballet terminology

D. A working knowledge of body directions
