Catalog Description:
This course is the foundation for your work in ballet. The information you absorb this semester will be the basis for more advanced and complex work. It is essential that your foundation be strong. Your progress will depend both on your ability to physically accomplish the work and on your thorough intellectual grasp of the concepts presented.

Course Objectives:
To introduce concepts and approaches to technique and challenge the students to strive for a strong technical base.

Course Content:
     A. Basic Movement Concepts

1) Correct alignment including vertical alignment of the pelvis and the lower back/abdominal connection, shoulders in relation to hips, hip sockets to the heels, head/neck on top of shoulder girdle, and the ability to move through level changes and across the floor supporting correct alignment.

2) Rotation from the hip sockets including the concepts of wrap/resist, squaring off and standing against the floor. Gaining the strength and control to stand through the backs of your legs.

3) Freedom and release. Working with strength but without gripping or excess tension in the muscle. Working with length.

     B. Movement Material

1) Stretching to increase your personal movement range.

2) Barre work including: plie, tendu, degage, rond de jambe a terre and en l’air, fondu, frappe, developpe, petit battement, grand battement.

3) Center work, including adagio, pirouettes and pique turns both en dehors and en de dans, chaine turns, soutinu turns, simple pas de bouree, changements, echappe, saute, sautes in various lines, jete, assemble, sissonne, grand jete, saute de chat, balance, waltz turns and simple combinations using the above material.

     C. A working knowledge of ballet terminology

     D. A working knowledge of body directions

     E. Written Material:

1) Mid-term exam
2) Quizzes
3) Final exam
