Definitions

Definitions must be specific!

A dog is a domestic mammal that is descended from the wolf.

A hamburger is a sandwich made with beef on a bun, and may include lettuce, sliced tomato, and relish.  

Skiing is a way of traveling across the snow with one's feet attached to two long thin boards while pushing oneself along with two long thin sticks.  

A house is a structure in which humans live.

NOTE:  We DO NOT SAY “ . . . is when.”  Pay attention to the grammar!  The object in  a definition sentence usually includes a dependent clause that begins with a relative pronoun.
