Tips on entering your answers
to fill-in questions

For tests that are corrected on-line, QuizMaker works in conjuction with CorrectQuiz which is a program that looks at the student's answers and compares it with an answer key which QuizMaker compiles using the answers that you indicate. The student's answer is correct if it is equal to or contains the entire answer listed in the answer key, otherwise it is wrong. To ensure that CorrectQuiz produces the desired results, you may have to format the answers in a certain way. The tips below will help guide you. There is also a short table which gives sample answers with matches.

Advanced answer feature

CorrectQuiz has the ability to correct questions that have several different required answers (this AND that) or several different alternative answers (this OR that). If you plan on making a quiz like this, please read on.
Here is a table with some sample answers and what they will and will not match:

  • 1The underscore character ("_") is the one exception to the rule about special characters being treated like spaces in inexact matches. In Perl, underscores are considered to be letters.

2Note the missing period in this example. For exact matches (as in "or" questions), if the answer in the answer key contains punctuation marks, the student's answer must contain the same marks or else it will be considered wrong.

3As mentioned earlier, if the student gets this answer wrong on a self-test, "Bob Dole and Bill Clinton" will be the correct answer displayed by CorrectQuiz.
