Speech 1, Elements of Public Speaking

Transfer: UC, CSU • IGETC AREA 1C (Oral Communication) • Prerequisite: None.

This is a course in public speaking for students learning to prepare and deliver more than just platform speeches.  Assignments include personal experience speeches, demonstrations, visual aids, impromptus, persuasion, and speaking for special occasions. Techniques for controlling nervousness, building self-confidence, and effective listening are emphasized.  In addition, students will hopefully exceed these objectives and realize they can be great public speakers. Students will speak often in front of the class because the more you speak, the better you become.  That is one of the central focuses of this course.  That is why attendance is emphasized.  You do the speaking, gain the confidence in yourself, and walk out of class a different person, hopefully everyday! Being an efficient and impacting speaker is also emphasized. If you feel scared of speaking in front of people, I guarantee after this class, you will feel differently. It is an awesome class!
