Dr. James E. Murphy
Dr. Murphy received a B.S. in Chemistry from the State University of New York at Binghamton in
1986. He received a Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology in 1992. His thesis work involved using laser spectroscopy to understand the
electronic structure of small molecules. From 1992 until 1994 he was a postdoctoral research assistant at
Battelle, Pacific Northwest Laboratory in Richland, WA. There
he used laser spectroscopy to gain a better understanding of the relationship between the electronic
structure and photodissociation in nitric oxide. He was a Visiting Assistant Professor at The University of Toledo in Toledo, OH
for the academic year of 1994-1995 where he taught general chemistry. He began teaching chemistry at Santa Monica College in the Fall of 1995.
