1. How fast must a meter stick be moving if its length is observed to shrink to 0.500m? (0.866 c)

2. An astronaut is traveling in space at a speed of 0.50 c relative to the earth. The astronaut measures her pulse rate to be 75 per minute. What is the pulse rate as observed on earth? If her speed was 0.990 c? (64.9, 10.6)

3. The proper length of spaceship 1 is 3 times longer than spaceship 2. They are traveling in the same direction past an observer. The observer sees the ships having the SAME length. If the slower ship’s speed is 0.350 c, what is the other’s?

4. A spaceship of proper length Lp = 300 m takes 7.5 x 10-7 s to pass a stationary observer (time measured by the observer). What is the speed of the ship as measured by the observer? (0.800 c)

5. Two space ships A and B move TOWARD each other (Draw a picture and be careful of the signs of velocities). An observer at rest sees them with speeds of vA = 0.75 c and vB = 0.85 c. What speed does B have with respect to A? (Hint: make the moving frame be A and so the speed of B relative to rest (u) is known. Then solve for u’.) (u’ = -0.98 c)
