Fall 2008: Final Exam Week
December 07, 2008 04:23 PM
We're almost done!
Students in the
Monday-Wednesday section have one last class meeting on
Monday--where they'll take the Americas unit
map quiz--and then
their exam on the following
Monday (December 15) from 8 to 11 AM in Drescher
208 (the regular
classroom). Students in the
Tuesday-Thursday section have no more meetings, except for the
final exam on
Tuesday from 8 to 11 AM in HSS 251 (the regular classroom). Regardless
of the section in which you're enrolled, you are
welcome to take the exam at either time/place listed
above.
The exam will be the same format as the midterm, just longer. It will be comprehensive, covering material from the entire semester, but it will more heavily emphasize the second-half materials. And at the final exam, you'll take your last map quiz, this one covering Southeast Asia. Bring a scantron form.

Fall 2008: Veterans Day
November 07, 2008 12:13 PM
Just a quick reminder to
my Monday-Wednesday students that there is
no
class on Monday, November 10, when SMC will be closed to
celebrate the Veterans' Day holiday. We will continue
with Unit 5
next week, for which
the notes have now been posted. There are no
assignments due next week, but I will be handing out
the fifth set of
Kaplan questions, which are due November
20.
Fall 2008: Unit 2 Map Quiz
September 28, 2008 01:45 PM
It's now week 6 of the
semester, and we'll soon begin Unit 3 (South and
Central Asia). This will take us up to the
Midterm Exam at the end of Week #8, but in the
meantime, you have your Unit 2 map quiz
this week in class (Wednesday/Thursday). Then, due
next week, October 9, is the 3rd set of Kaplan
questions.
Fall 2008: End of Week 3
September 12, 2008 12:11 PM
With the first three
weeks of the semester behind us, we're almost finished
with Unit
1. Next
week we will thus move on to Unit
2, for
which all the lecture notes are now posted. We will
also have our first unit map
quiz: on
Tuesday
for my
Tuesday-Thursday students, and Wednesday
for my
Monday-Wednesday students. You will be given a copy
of the blank outline world map that is available on
our homepage, and you'll be asked to locate
about a dozen examples of the "Key Places" that are
listed with the lecture notes for Unit
1.
I will also be handing out next week the second set of Kaplan questions; they are due on the 25th.

Fall 2008: Welcome!

Welcome
to Geography 11 at Santa Monica
College!
In addition to this website, be sure to explore, throughout the semester, our on-line discussion forum at SMC's eCompanion website. To access, simply direct your web browser to the following:
http://smconline.org/index.real?action=eCompanion
Once you've logged in and found your way to our class, click on "Bulletin Board" to read and participate in various discussions about the class. To help get you started, I've provided an easy ice-breaker topic, designed both to introduce us to each other and to get us thinking about the complicated and fluid ideas (in today's world at least) of "culture" and "identity". In the meantime, you can also get off to a running start by reading the first chapter of the textbook. See you in class!
