There's not much to this page, other than the brief guide below to some bicycle-related websites. Its focus (for now at least) is to offer advice and spread the gospel--albeit in a limited way--of bicycle transportation, particularly to people living and working on the "westside" of greater Los Angeles. I also post occasional reports on my own commuting and other bike riding experiences to my blog, and some bicycle-related photographs to my Flickr site.

Organizations

The number and diversity of cycling organizations, both locally and nationwide, are far greater than most people would suspect. Here is but a sampling:
Cycle Santa Monica!
Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition
California Bicycle Coalition
League of American Bicyclists
America Bikes
Bikes Belong
Active Transportation
Critical Mass

Books and Advice

No less numerous are the individuals who have dispensed thoughtful advice on bicycling issues, bicycling skills and practice, and bicycle maintenance. To greater and lesser degrees, I've found the following websites and books to be especially helpful.
Ken Kifer's Bike Pages
Sheldon Brown
John Forester (also see his book, Effective Cycling)
Book:
The Art of Urban Cycling
Book:
Greg Lemond's Complete Book of Bicycling
Book:
Zinn and the Art of Road Bike Maintenance

Bike Shops

The premier local bike shop on the west side, particularly for the racing/recreational set, is Helen's Cycles, whose flagship store is in mid-city Santa Monica. I'm not personally familiar with Atomic Cycles up in the Valley, but the shop is widely recommended as a place to find a good used bike. Another popular option is the central L.A. co-op, the Bicycle Kitchen. Speaking of co-ops, the national giant REI not only has a number of outlets locally, but also online offerings which include a substantial amount of cycling gear. And as far as on-line retailers go, I've personally used and been happy with Colorado Cyclist, Bikeman.com, Universal Cycles, and BikeTiresDirect.com.

Commuting

With gasoline prices well above $3 per gallon, and obesity rates no less inflationary, commuting by bicycle has never been more popular--or at least newsworthy. And the Internet, of course, has proven a prolific means for bike commuters both experienced and new to dispense with words of wisdom. Again, the following is but a sample of the bike commuting information that is now out there:
