Objectives

You will learn theory and concepts of VPNs and their component technologies (networking, cryptology, linux operating system). VPNs based on several technologies will be constructed, intended to equip you to build VPNs of your own.

Of equal importance, expect other reading materials from the class website and internet to be liberally assigned. You are responsible for accessing and if desired printing it for study.

I maintain a class website. You are responsible for awareness of the information posted there. Announcements, grade reports, assignments, and subject matter will be found there. Class meetings – Wednesday evenings January 8 - March 26, 2003 6:30pm-9:30pm, room 211 of the UNEX (University Extension) building in Westwood, 10995 LeConte Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90024.

 

Lab - there is no laboratory nor formal lab sessions. In class, we have a 5-node testbed simulating/containing 2 LANs with gateways and an intermediate untrusted network. Part of class time will be devoted to the practical objective of setting up VPNs and their supporting technologies.

 

Grades – based on several assignment, tests, and classroom demonstration of knowledge. It is expected the class will be small enough to be conducted somewhat interactively, with some student hands-on participation in lab-like activities. This will allow me to become familiar with you and your progress.
