OBJECTIVES:
The purpose of English 5 is to acquaint students with some of the foremost authors and works of English literature from the beginnings through the 18th century. From our point of view, English literature is not "foreign" literature. English literature through 1700's is a fundamental part of America's literary heritage. Shakespeare, for instance, belongs as much to people in America as to anyone now living in England, for we are dealing not with political and national issues, but with a common language.
GRADED ASSIGNMENTS:
1. About 4 exams worth 100-120 points each.
2. Occasional quizzes as needed worth 6-10 points each.
3. A 5-7 page typewritten research paper worth 100 points for those striving for an A or a B in the class.
4. A comprehensive final exam worth 150-170 points.
