Annotated Bibliographies to support Critical Thinking about ...EDUCATION PRISONS & DELINQUENCY HOSPITALS, MEDICINE & HEALTH GENDER & SEXUALITY ADDICTION CULTURE & MASS MEDIA LEARNING DISABILITIES by Chelsea Novalle (graduate of PHILOS 7) (1) National Center for Learning Disabilities (NCLD) http://www.NCLD.ORG/ Description: "NCLD's mission is to promote public awareness and understanding of children and adults with learning disabilities, and to provide national leadership on their behalf." The organization is non-profit-making. The site contains accounts of NCLD's educational programmes, national information and referral service, and legislative advocacy. It also has information on various disabilities, resources and publications, and links to related sites. (2) Learning Disabilities Association of America (LDA) http://www.ldanatl.org/ Description: LDA was formed in 1964 by a group of parents of children with learning difficulties. It is non-profit-making and is composed of individuals with learning difficulties, family members and concerned professionals. Its functions include education, research, legal assistance, dissemination of information, and promoting career opportunities. All these are represented on the web site, as are an inventory of books and materials on the subject, and some articles from recent "Newsbriefs". (3) Dyslexia, The Gift http://www.dyslexia.com/ Description: This site is dedicated to the positive side of "learning disability", contains information and articles on the positive aspects of dyslexia and 70 other learning disabilities that were once categorised under dyslexia. Also contains an excerpt of the book "The Gift of Dyslexia" as well as links to related organisations and associations. (4) Centre for Studies on Inclusive Education http://inclusion.uwe.ac.uk/csie/csiehome.htm Description: CSIE is an educational charity working towards the inclusion of all pupils with disabilities or learning difficulties in ordinary schools and the gradual closure of all special schools. It provides information and advice about inclusive education and related issues. The Centre's commitment to inclusive schools for all is based on basic human rights principles. Full text of the "Inclusion Charter is available", as are summaries of education law relating to special educational needs and selections from and summaries of UN conventions and reports. (5) International Dyslexia Association (IDA) http://www.interdys.org/index.htm Description: "IDA (formerly The Orton Dyslexia Society) is an internatioal non-profit, scientific and educational organization dedicated to the study and treatment of dyslexia ... IDA works nationally and locally on issues such as legislation, public awareness, research, public information, and education." The site includes definitions and accounts of dyslexia, conferences, technology, lists of publications and research. There is also a "kids' site". (6) LD In Deth http://www.ldonline.org/ld_indepth/self_esteem/self_esteem.html Description: LD In Depth offers a vast array of information on topics within the area of learning disabilities. Here you'll find articles written by the leading experts, research findings reported by top researchers, and the latest news in the field of learning disabilities. |
