Compile a presentation suitable to give to a producer for a production you want to do at SMC.  Each pair of students will have 12 minutes.  Both people must read the entire play and do one’s fair share in preparation and presentation.  Submit a diary. 

Deal with the plot (2 mins), the themes (2 mins), the genre or form (1 mins), the visual elements (5 mins), and summarize with the worth of the play (2 mins).

 

THINGS TO TURN IN:

A.  Concept statement:  Your statement should be no longer than 1 page, single spaced.  Bring 43 copies so everyone in class can have a copy.  Deal with the following:

            Why is it an important play? 

            What is the major theme?  What are other themes?  Whose play is it (Which character has the most important objectives and messages?)

            Include in the concept statement the style and design needs.

                        What major images do you want to use to get these across? 

                        How will you visualize these images?

            How will this fit into the SMC season? (You may deal with space, manpower, and budget here—a musical is at least 3 times more expensive than a straight play. Single set shows are easier to do than those with multiple sets.  How many costumes are needed?)
 

B.  A bibliography in MLA format of at least 10 entries, including at least two from each of the following kinds of sources:

            Newspapers (L.A. Times, N.Y. Times, Backstage, The Daily News are examples).

            Periodicals (American Theatre, Time, Playbill, others).

            Play scripts (cite other works by the author).

            Text books (Barranger, Cohen, Gassner and Dukore, Gillespie, Wilson, Brockett and Hildy are good sources).

            Online sources (Playbill.com, but be sure of source accuracy).

 
C.  Attach a visual handbook (8-10 pages) with sketches or original drawings of sets, a costume plot, properties list, sound and lighting notes, and any other elements important to your vision.  You may supplement this with Powerpoint. 


D.  Note any other needs—royalties (usually $200 or $400:  $50/performance), and other costs (costumes, sets, lights, sound, makeup, the hiring of special non-departmental personnel--musicians, special effects people, and fight choreographers).
 

Be ready to present this in class.  You may not read the presentation.  50 points possible.
