Where does this class meet?   SCI 227

What is the section number?  1068

Is this course included in IGETC? This course satisfies a life science with lab General Education requirement (4 units). Biology 3 is NOT intended for students who are majoring in biology or a related field. This course is not open to students who have completed or are currently enrolled in Biology 6, Botany 1 or Zoology 5. No UC credit is given for Biology 3 if taken after Biology 6 or 7. It is included in IGETC AREA 5
Do I have to have a computer or have access to one? No, but it does help. There is helpful information on the Internet
Can I get help if I have problems? Certainly, the professor has email and also office hours. You can usually find a tutor if needed,
Do I have to know how to operate a computer?

Now that certainly is not a dumb question. BUT, this question does give me an idea of your age. You young people seem to have computer understanding genes or something. I don't know where you got them, but most of us old people envy you and your computer abilities. I still haven't decided who/what is the most stubborn, the computer that won't do what I want it to do or me. I have stayed up all night rather than give in to a &%#! computer ....it  usually wasn't working the next morning. You decide who was the most stubborn. Back to what you asked. And don't be offended by some of these very obvious ones, but I have students that are computer illiterate.....and these ain't  just us old suckers.

  • how to turn it on.
  • how to open and find files
  • how to word process
  • how to make an attachment to your document
  • how to surf the web
  • how to use a CD-ROM
  • how to swear, cuss, cry, or someway let off steam/anger/rage when the computer fails (or) the Internet goes down at the critical time (or) the printer descides to quit, (or), (or), (or), (or)
What text do I need to purchase?  See syllabus

How does this compare with regular fall and spring sessions?

You can't compare a class in the winter session to one in the spring....that like comparing good O'l Nebr steak with tofu.  The winter session goes much faster. Remember, we are packing a semester into 6 weeks. That does means we move FAST. The same material, labs, topics, etc are in both types of classes. On line simply means that you do the lecture part at home....somewhere away from the campus.

I assume that we will cover less material during the winter session since it is much shorter than the regular sessions.

I know you are joking. A biology 3 grade does not include when you took it. So, the same material is covered.

Do you take attendence or can I skip?

If I/the teacher have to be there, you/the student have to be there.....and on time!!!!  The computer takes role....see the syllabus

Is it true that Biology is extremely difficult?

No. You may be told this, but it is untrue. But it does require study time and the ability to read and think.  The most important thing about Biology is keeping up and asking for help if you are having difficulties. Use the treaded discussions. Ask the teacher or get help from the tutors in our new Science Learning Lab. Ask for Sandra Willis for tutoring help or your Biology questions. She is the tutoring coordinator and is responsible for giving you help. However, if you do not get tutoring help or can't get your questions answered, see your teacher about the problem and the reasons why your are not getting tutoring help.

Do we go on field trips?

Sure thing. The best way to learn about life is to spend time with it. We will make trips around the  campus. We will certainly go to various habitats such as  Temescal Gateway Park, and  Topanga State Park . Hopefully we can find time to visit  UCLA Botanical Garden on some Sunday if enough of the class wishes to go. Do understand these are not big parties, but a time to learn  about"life". Of course, all work will get boring, so we will play a little too.

Do I get to grow anything?

You certainly do.  We will study plants in Biology 3 and will grow some. We will study hydroponics, fertilizers and and plant propagation. We will probably grow no animals, just observe and pet them.

Is Biology 3 a lab course that transfers

This course satisfies a life science with lab General Education requirement (4 units). Biology 3 is NOT intended for students who are majoring in biology or a related field. This course is not open to students who have completed or are currently enrolled in Biology 6, Botany 1 or Zoology 5. No UC credit is given for Biology 3 if taken after Biology 6 or 7.

I do not like to dissect animals. Should I take Botany so I do not have to dissect animals  in Biology 3?

Animals are not dissected in Biology 3. You will have a chance to look at some preserved sheep hearts. Movies and multimedia presentations are substituted for dissection. Some find these rather gross, but they are nothing like the gross scenes in movies or on TV that I am certain you see. If you are really afraid of seeing pictures of dissected animals, take Botany 1. No animals or pictures of dissected animals occur in this class

Do I have to read the "Current Information" posted on the WEB?

Yes, if you are taking certain sections of Biology. Some teachers will use the Internet as a source of information. If you are not on line at home, you can use the new computers in our new computer lab in our new science building. Serious students and teachers now use the Internet because it is such an exciting source of information and makes life so interesting.  Hodson will give some ...not much...class time for this activity. All of us must use the internet or we will soon be a part of that segment of society that finds themselves left out. And you should be reading about the argument that is now occurring over Genetically modified foods. It even has the US and English governments involved. This shows what the scientific method and science is about..... an organized way of collecting data and arguing about it.

What do I have to learn in lab? Is lab worth the work?

Lab is where the action occurs. Many studies show that we learn and retain:

  • 10% of what we hear
  • 15% of what we see
  • 20% of what we see and hear
  • 40% of what we discuss with others
  • 80% of what we experience directly and practice
  • 90% of what we attempt to teach each other

Lab is where we directly experience biology and biological concepts. We will cooperate and teach each other.....learn and have fun doing it. AND the best place to learn about plants is in the field, so with hard work in lab, we will have time for field trips. There are nice flowers in the Santa Monica Mountains that we are visiting.
