Overview - On The Human Genome Project

The Human Genome Project is a multinational collaborative attempt to unravel the mystery that makes us human, to discover our genetic makeup. This massive effort seeks to establish all of the genes which are found in humans, to determine how our DNA is arranged, and what our genes consist of. This Santa Monica College web site “On the Human Genome Project” examines many of the issues associated with unraveling our DNA sequence. It looks at the history of the project, the tools of the trade, the myriad applications, the moral dilemma associated with unraveling our DNA, and probes gently into a future dominated by this wonderful new knowledge we now have in our grasp. We are unequivocally committed to disseminating information relevant to the Human Genome Project, using the latest media rich communication tools available. We want to help bring greater understanding of one of the most monumental milestones in the human journey to the general public, where this information is offered in a fashion conducive to acceptance and understanding, without prohibitive scientific detail, but with enough data to give some idea as to what was done. This is part of our contribution to providing a climate of informed understanding in society, rather than empty rhetoric dominated by bias and a lack of insight. Take the tour of our site, ponder, and decide for yourself; become informed, because it is important that we all have a voice of reason to provide the guidance essential to harnessing responsibly the incredible potential associated with the Human Genome Project. Enjoy, become enlightened. Be stimulated.
