English 23 -- Intermediate Reading and Vocabulary -- Spring, 2001

                                                                                                                                        

Class Structure
1.  Meets 1 hour and 20 minutes on Tuesdays and Fridays
2.  Unit Credit -- 3 units (non-transferable)
3.  Grading -- A, B, C, D, F, or W
4.  Prerequisites -- Group B Placement on the English Assessment Test or English 83

5.  Homework each week:
         
Work for 2 hours in the Reading Laboratory (starts Week #3)
         
Learn  20 vocabulary words a week (starts Week #3)
         
Complete exercises in your textbook
         
Read and reflect on short stories when assigned 

Goals 
* increase your reading speed while increasing your comprehension
* build your reading vocabulary
* strengthen your study reading of college textbooks
* widen your reading range and enjoyment                                                                   
* enhance your critical reading skills
 

Grade Based On:
1.  Difference between pre and post test scores
2.  Attendance (
more than 3 absences may result in your being dropped from the class)
3.  Midterm and Final Exams
4.  Vocabulary Tests and Mastery Tests in Langan textbook
5.  Preparation for and participation in class discussions
6.  Reading Laboratory Work

4.  one of the Townsend Press Vocabulary Skills books (wait to buy your book until Week #3)  

Materials
1.  2 Scantron answer sheets -- #882-ES (green with a/b/c/d/e bubbles)
2.  2 packets of 3x5 cards -- one side lined
3.  an 8 1/2 x 11 folder with 2 pockets
