NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) offers an Internship program aimed at Community College Students.
More details on this Student Independant Research Intern (SIRI) program can be found at http://siri.jpl.nasa.gov/
This program runs every Fall and Spring, with the application process staring the prior semester.
You will need:

1. An advisor at SMC - preferrably a faculty who knows you, and you must get their approval.
2. sign up for an Internship class at the advisor's department.
3. Apply for the internship, and get selected

Note that these internships are not paid.
