Homework assignments should be completed and self corrected by the beginning of the next class.  Please do not attempt to do last week’s week homework during the current class.

Complete Ex. 4-2.

Using the sentences in Ex. 4-3, identify the nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and pronouns.  Put parentheses around prepositional phrases and brackets around infinitive phrases. Rewrite or word process the sentences on a sheet of paper.

Do Ex. 4-5 and 4-6.  

Week 2: Feb. 25

Due: WB: Ex. 4-2—4-6 due.

        HB: Ex. 4.1, 4.2 & 4.3.

 

Continue study of sentence parts and parts of speech.

Study p. 123 -- 129.

Do Ex. 4-7 & 4-8.

Review all previous work and visit Internet sites for more grammar practice. See English 24 website for links to various grammar sites.

Study for a quiz on identifying subjects, verbs, prepositional & infinitive phrases, direct and indirect objects and subject complements.

Week 3: March 4

Quiz: Sentence Parts and Parts of Speech

 

Study pages 149-156 in the workbook and complete exercises 6-1 and 6-2 on combining ideas into a sentence. Also, use Ex. 4-6 to identify various sentence parts: subjects, verbs, infinitive and prepositional phrases and direct objects.

Review the eight parts of speech and how to identify the part of speech of words in a sentence. 

Group Two's first writing assignment is due at the beginning of class 03/11 or can be e-mailed earlier.

Week 4: March 11

Review sentence parts and parts of speech.

 Group One's second writing assignment is due at the beginning of class 03/18 or can be e-mailed earlier.

Week 5: March 18

1. Verbal phrases: gerunds and participles 

2. Diagramming sentences.

The eight parts of speech—their names, definitions, and questions
b. 
The major sentence parts—subjects (complete vs. simple), predicates and verbs, direct objects, indirect objects, subject complements, prepositional and infinitive phrases and how these phrases function as adverbs, adjectives or nouns
c. 
The rule of subject-verb agreement and how to apply it
d. 
The fact that placement of modifiers can affect meaning
e. 
Definition for clauses and how to differentiate independent from dependent or subordinating clauses  

Go to http://www.dailygrammar.com/archive.html to do the exercises on verbals. Be sure to learn the definitions and traits of gerunds, participles, and infinitives and the questions for identifying nouns, adjectives and adverbs.

Complete the phrase identification worksheet passed out in class.

Diagramming homework to be announced in class.

Week 7: April 1

 

1. Group One submits Writing Assignment #3.

2. Quiz: Phrases.

3. Diagramming sentences from Week 5's homework.

4. Ch. 19: Avoiding Misplaced Modifiers in the workbook. Complete Ex. 19-1  in the workbook. 

 

Group Two's third writing assignment is due at the beginning of class 04/08 or can be e-mailed earlier.

 

Misplaced modifiers: Ex. 19.2 in the handbook.

 

Study chapters 13 (Run-ons and Comma Splices) and 14  (Fragments).

Complete exercises 13-3 and  13-5 and 14-2  and 14-5 in the workbook. The work load may be lighter if you word process the sentences instead of handwriting them.

Week 8: April 8

 

  1. Group Two submits Writing Assignment #3.

 

 Study Ch. 15: Subject-Verb Agreement. In the workbook, complete Ex. 15-1 through 15-4. Also, complete Ex. 15.1 and 15.2 in the handbook. Study for subject-verb agreement quiz.

3. To discover your troublesome verbs, do the online diagnostic verb tense exercise.

 Study Ch. 16: Using Verb Forms Correctly in your handbook. Complete Ex. 16.1--16.3. In the workbook, complete Ex. 16-1 through 16-3 and 16-5 and 16-6.

Week 11: May 6

 

Continue to work on Verb Tenses.

Study for a quiz on Verb Tense to be given Tuesday, May 13.
