Grading Policy for English 24    Spring 2003

Instructor: J. Cheney

We will have regular tests, five writing assignments and a comprehensive final exam. Your final grade will be based upon your test average, writing grade, attendance grade and final exam grade.

Writing Grade:  To give you practice and feedback on your writing, you will write five one-page essays. The class will be divided into two groups, and each group will have a different due date for the writing assignments. Be sure to learn the due dates for your group.

Group One's due dates (at the beginning of each class): March 4, March 18, April 1, April 22, and May 6.

Group Two's due dates (at the beginning of each class): March 11, March 25, April 8, April 29, and May 13.

Each assignment is worth twenty points:

Formatting: double-spaced, one-inch margins on all sides, titled, word processed in a 12 font 4 points
Evidence of your having used an electronic spell check and grammar check and that you have proofread your own work.
Since this is a grammar class in which you are learning to be somewhat independent in your use of grammar, please do not have anyone else proofread your writing for you.
4 points
Submitted on time: at the beginning of class or earlier via e-mail. Even if you are going to be absent, you are responsible for submitting your work on time. Sending it through e-mail is the best way to submit your work if you are going to be absent from class. No late work is accepted. 4 points
Application of rules of usage and grammar: Errors in grammar rules that we have studied will result in a loss of points. Subtract one point for each grammatical error. 8 points

Your final grade is based on the following scale:

90 to 100 percent = A
80 to 89 percent = B
70 to 79 percent = C
60 to 69 percent = D
0 to 59 percent = F
