In Thomas More's book Utopia, which is the name he gives to an island supposedly located off the coast of the New World, the people of his commonwealth wear unbleached wool, eat together in great halls, punish adultery with death when one is convicted twice of the offense, and allow husbands and wives to inspect each other naked before they are married so that no one will be deceived by the other. The Utopians have no individuality. They try as hard as they can to eliminate passion. More makes no mention of any artists among them.
