Avoiding Confusing Verb Shifts

1. Archeologists have surveyed the earth with satellites and have found many remnants of a lost city buried in Arabian sands.

2. Mercutio has to die in Romeo and Juliet, or else he would carry the play off from the two young lovers, who are not nearly as interesting as he is.

3. The band hit a sour note, and the drum major got sore at the tuba section.

4. Children who are often noisy at a concert annoy their parents.

5. King James I, who died in 1625, had never taken a bath in his adult life, and those who prepared him for burial had to scour his underwear off his body.
