Course Information and Resources: Fall 2009

Course 1 English 21B, English Fundamentals...second semester of 21 series classes. In this class students will experience a variety of teaching methods used to introduce the basic elements of composition and reading. Students will read their writings, work on group projects, and discuss the writings of various fiction and non-fiction writers.

TEXTS: Siddhartha, Hesse, Herman. In this novel, students will analyze and discuss the art of "teaching and learning". What is knowledge? How is it acquired? Is too much knowledge a dangerous thing? Is there a difference between spiritual and intellectual knowledge? How does Hesse's novel parallel the lives of college students today?

Between the Lines. Studying a variety of non-fiction writers, including journalists and essayists, student will explore the idea of justice. Margaret Carlson, in "That Killer Smile" states that we have become a nation that "forgives all and punishes nothing." Using the Menendez brothers as a primary example, Carlson argues that society accepts all excuses, and its defense attorneys "get away with murder." I will focus on two primary subjects throughout the semester, education and justice.
