Course Description This is a general course with lecture and laboratory.  It can be used for transfer, elective, or preparation for allied health occupations.  It introduces functional interrelationships of cell chemistry, cellular physiology, blood and circulation, respiration, muscle activity, endocrine glands, reproduction, digestion, excretion, brain, nerves, and sense organs.

Prerequisites: Chemistry 10 with a C or better (or eligibility for chemistry 11*) and Anatomy 1 with a C or better; Math 31 with a C or better is a prerequisite for Chem 10; English 1 with a C or better is a prerequisite for Anatomy 1.

If you have met the English 1, Math 31, Chem 10, and Anat 1 prerequisites, but still remain unsure if you are ready for physiology, take the quiz at http://www.aw-bc.com/getreadyquiz/  If you did not do well on this quiz, then take the Math, Chemistry, and ESL and/or English placement  (assessment) exams and make an appointment with a SMC Counselor to discuss your educational plan.

  • SMC Assessment Center: http://www.smc.edu/assessment/ : select "Testing Policies" and/or "Tests and Services"
    • Liberal Arts Building, Room 109; (310) 434-8040; valid photo identification is required
  • SMC's Counseling - http://www.smc.edu/counseling/ - Create and discuss your education plan and course sequencing; Schedule your appointment (310)434-4210.

Course Objectives Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
  • Explain the major concepts of the cell including structure, function, and processes.
  • Explain the major concepts of cell and membrane physiology including membrane transport and cell communication.
  • Explain the functional interrelationships of tissues, organs, and organ systems of the human body within the framework of homeostasis.
  • Apply physiological concepts to issues of human health and common pathologies.
  • Understand and apply principles of the scientific process to physiological problems.
  • Conduct experiments and record and display data appropriately.
  • Analyze experimental data while demonstrating logical and critical thinking skills.
  • Compose appropriate scientific reports.
  • Use basic computer technology in the field of physiology.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Given a problem or set of conditions, write a hypothesis, and provide an experimental design, and identify dependent and independent variables, and control and experimental groups. Assessed by completion of examination or generating a lab report from experiment data that includes a hypothesis, a description of the experimental design, and identification of the dependent and independent variables, and control and experimental groups.

  • Identify the physiological mechanisms that each body system employs to maintain homeostasis. Assessed by successful completion of a multiple choice or matching examination.

Grading Policy Your FINAL GRADE is determined by percentage of total points accumulated during the session as shown in the Grading Scale below.
Grade Percentage of Points
A 90.0 - 100.0%
B 80.0 - 89.9%
C 70.0 - 79.9%
D 55.0 - 69.9%
F Below 55.0%

Your grades are determined by your points earned on exams, quizzes, online assignments, and on-campus class/lab participation.  There will be approximately 1000  possible points during the semester from the following sources:

Section 3091
