Merle Arnold was born in Lyons, Nebraska and raised on the island of Maui in the State of Hawaii. He graduated from St. Louis High School in Honolulu, Hawaii in June of 1963. He obtained his B.S. in Chemistry from Seattle University in June of 1967. From there, he went to the University of Notre Dame where he earned a Ph.D. in Inorganic Chemistry in August of 1971. He did postdoctoral work at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He was a full-time chemistry instructor at Northern Virginia Community College from September, 1972 to June, 1974. He became a full-time instructor in chemistry at Santa Monica College in the Fall of 1975 and he has been Chair of the Physical Science Dept. since Sept. of 1990.
