History of World Theatre

 

Class Objective:
The purpose of this course is to provide students with an overall view of theatre and its development throughout history. The course will span from the Classical Greek period to the present day. There will be an exploration of particular periods of great Theatre.


Required Text:
    The Theatre: A Concise History by Phyllis Hartnoll

Suggested Text:
    NTC's Dictionary of Theatre and Drama Terms by J. Mobley


Attendance:
Attendance in class is imperative. Excessive absences may result in being dropped from the class. You may be dropped after 3 unexcused absences. In addition, tardiness will not be tolerated. Arriving late to class may be counted as an absence. Furthermore, points will be deducted from your overall grade for every unexcused absence from class.

 

         Take Home Study Exams and Pop Quizzes:
        
Pop-quizzes and take home study exams will be given during the session. Pop-quizzes will be given during
            class time and will be closed text/multiple choice/true-false format. Take home study exams will be answered
            with an open text, essay type format and are designed to aid the student with study effort.
 


Midterm and Final Exams:
A Midterm and a Final Exam will be given on the dates listed in the class schedule. Exams will be multiple choice/true-false format.


Play Critiques:
You will be required to see the Santa Monica College Theatre Arts Department productions. Information on these productions is listed in the class schedule. Two typewritten papers will be due on the dates also listed in the schedule. An outline stating the criteria for these critiques will be handed out in class.


Additional Reading and Video Viewing:
Students will be required to read several plays throughout the session. In addition, students can receive extra credit points by viewing videos that are applicable to the course of study. See list provided by instructor.


Student Project:
Students earn points by turning in a "Student Research Project." The instructor will determine criteria, format, and subject of project.
 

Student Project:
Al l exams and Pop-quizzes will be taken on Scantron #882-E with a #2 pencil. Students are responsible for supplying these items on exam days.



        Grading:
         
Attendance - 100 points
            Pop-Quizzes- 150 points
            Study Guide Exams- 100 points
            Papers- 50 points
            Project - 50 points
                         Midterm- 100 points
                         Final- 100 points
