Beginning Stage Make-up
Class Objective:
The purpose of this course is the study and practice of the specific techniques in the art of stage make-up with emphasis on developing knowledge and skill in its design and practical application. The class objective is to provide the students with an understanding of the make-up fundamentals necessary to prepare make-up artist/actors for the theater. Attention will be given to the utilization of these techniques and the development of character through make-up.
Attendance:
Attendance at all scheduled work shops and class meetings is imperative. Excessive absences: (more than 3), will result in being dropped from the class. In addition, absences and excessive tardiness will affect your grade. Late arrivals to class may be counted as an absence.
Participation:
You are required to participate in all class activities, including: lectures, demonstrations, video tape viewing, make-up practice sessions, preparation work, and clean up. You will be graded on your participation in these assignments. During the process of the session you will be given specific notes by the make-up instructor. Your ability to make the necessary adjustments on your make-up design and/or application will effect the outcome of your grade.
Supply Needs:
You are required to purchase all of your own personal make-up supply needs. Information on these supplies is listed in "the make-up kit" handout. Some additional make-up for specific projects may also need to be purchased during the process of the session. All make-up must be purchased in advance of designing due dates. You are responsible for purchasing and practicing with these supplies on your own time. Make-up supplies must be brought to all class meetings.
Design Notebooks: "The Make-up Morgue"
In addition to participating in the activities above you are required to assemble and keep a make-up research notebook. These notebooks will include, lecture notes, character studies, supply lists, application/design references, photos, color charts, sketches, and drawings. These notebooks must be brought to all class workshops and are to be used as a make-up design guide during the process of the session. Research notebooks will be turned in to the make-up instructor, graded, and returned to students. Please see class schedule for notebook due date. I will give all students a handout stating the criteria for these notebooks. Your ability to keep a well-organized, thorough notebook is mandatory and will affect the outcome of your grade.
SMC Theatre Production:
You will be required during the session to participate, as designated by instructor, in the Santa Monica College Theatre Arts Department production. The information on this production will be listed in the class itinerary. A typewritten paper, base d on your participation, will be due on the date listed in the class itinerary.
Midterm and Final exam:
The midterm will be based on the definitive design and application techniques of a specific character's make-up, designated by the instructor. The final exam will be based on an arranged student project assignment. An outline stating criteria for student projects will be handed out in class.
Grading:
Attendance/Participation: 30%
Preparation/Design Notebooks: 30%
Papers/Midterm/Final Exam: 40%
