Introduction to Theatre

 

Class Objective:
The purpose of this course is to provide students with an overall view of Theatre and its various elements. There will be an exploration of particular periods of great Theatre. Students will gain knowledge to provide a basis for evaluating the theatre production.


Required Text:
    “Theatre”: by Robert Cohen (See Instructor before purchase)
    NTC's Dictionary of Theatre and Drama Terms by J. Mobley


Attendance:
Attendance in class is imperative. Excessive absences may result in being dropped from the class. You may be dropped after 3 unexcused absences. In addition, tardiness will not be tolerated. Arriving late to class may be counted as an absence.


Take Home Study Exams and Pop Quizzes:
Pop-quizzes and take home study exams will be given during the session. Pop-quizzes will be given during class time and will be closed text/multiple choice/true-false format. Take home study exams will be answered with an open text, instructor-determined format and are designed to aid the student with study effort.
 

Midterm and Final Exams:
A Midterm and a Final Exam will be given on the dates listed in the class schedule. Exams will be multiple choice/true-false and/or definition work bank format.


Play Critiques:
You will be required to see the Santa Monica College Theatre Arts Department productions. Information on these productions is listed in the class schedule. Two typewritten papers will be due on the dates also listed in the schedule. An outline stating the criteria for these critiques will be handed out in class.


Additional Reading and Video Viewing:
Students will be required to read several plays throughout the session. In addition, students will be expected to give full attention to the video viewing assignments.


Student Midterm Project:
Students earn points by turning in a "Student Research Project." The instructor will determine criteria, format, and subject of project.
 

Definition Homework Notebooks:
Students will be required to keep a notebook of definitions/terms. These notebooks must be brought to every class meeting. The course instructor will provide the class with a list of terms on a weekly basis. Using your NTC's Dictionary: Theatre and Drama Terms textbook, look up instructor assigned terms. Theatre terms and definitions are assigned to supplement the subject material covered in class. These notebooks will be collected periodically throughout the semester. Your ability to keep current on definition homework and to keep a well-organized notebook is mandatory and will determine the outcome of your final grade. Organization: Write the term (underline it) and write the definition. Below the definition write additional student comments on how this particular term/definition relates to your current class work. Definition homework will be collected on instructor demand. Notebooks must be brought to every class meeting.

   Homework - 100 points
   Class Discussions - 400 points
   Papers - 100 points
   Projects - 100 points
   Midterm- 100 points
   Final- 100 points
